Teaching Philosophy

“My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that music education should be engaging, personal, and meaningful at every stage of a student’s development. I view music lessons not only as technical training but as a space where students build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong connection to music.

I work with students of diverse ages, learning styles, and musical backgrounds, and I believe that there is no single path to musical growth. My teaching is highly individualized: lessons are shaped around each student’s interests, abilities, and goals, whether that means developing solid foundational skills, preparing for auditions and assessments, or simply discovering the joy of making music. By setting clear yet flexible goals, I help students experience both structure and freedom in their learning.

A key element of my teaching is integrating strong musicianship with hands-on, experiential learning. I regularly incorporate listening, singing, rhythmic movement, and creative exploration into lessons, helping students internalize musical concepts rather than memorizing them mechanically. This approach is especially effective for young learners, as it strengthens ear training, rhythm, and musical understanding while keeping lessons active and engaging.

I place great importance on building a positive and encouraging learning environment. Students learn best when they feel supported, respected, and motivated. I emphasize progress over perfection, guiding students to recognize their achievements and develop resilience through challenges. Regular feedback and reflection help students understand their growth and take ownership of their musical journey.

Communication with families is central to my teaching practice. I believe that collaboration among teachers, students, and parents creates the strongest foundation for success. I aim to keep families informed and involved, while fostering an atmosphere where music becomes a natural and joyful part of home life.

As an active performing musician and a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate, my teaching is deeply informed by real-world performance experience and advanced musical training. My background allows me to guide students with a clear long-term perspective - helping them build healthy technique, thoughtful musicianship, and effective practice habits from the very beginning. At the same time, I am committed to meeting each student where they are, ensuring that professional insight is delivered in an age-appropriate, supportive, and inspiring way.

Ultimately, my goal is to help students see music as a meaningful form of expression and connection. Whether a student continues toward advanced study or carries music with them as a lifelong companion, I strive to provide them with the skills, curiosity, and confidence to engage with music in a way that is fulfilling and sustainable.”
