Sho Kato flute instructor

Sho Kato,

Sho Kato

Flute, Piccolo

Teaching Philosophy

“Taking inspiration from my past teachers, I believe in nurturing every student as not only a flutist, but also as a well-rounded musician. Most importantly, I believe in making music enjoyable for everybody and providing an environment where they feel free to take risks and have fun!”

Biography

Flutist Sho Kato completed his Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Boston Symphony piccoloist Cynthia Meyers. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music with Bonita Boyd, he performed regularly with the Eastman Philharmonia, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the Eclectet Woodwind Quintet, and OSSIA, a student-led New Music ensemble. A versatile performer, Sho has performed with groups such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Cape Symphony Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester City Ballet, and the United States Army Field Band. He was a finalist in the 2017-2018 James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition.

Devoted to education and outreach, he has taught lessons and clinics and given performances in the Seattle area, Key West, Geneva, NY, and Nagoya, Japan. He was also involved in the Community Performances and Partnerships Program as a Musical Storytelling Fellow at the New England Conservatory, where he combined children’s stories with music to bring music to schools in the Boston area.

Past teachers include Anne Harrow, Donna Shin, Zart Dombourian-Eby, and Alicia Suarez.

Sho began teaching in 2016 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in October 2019, where he teaches online lessons.

A Bit More…

Learn more about Sho Kato in his Teacher Feature.

“My daughter is thoroughly enjoying flute lessons with Sho. She is so proud of herself for the progress she’s made so far, thanks to Sho for helping her with initial challenges in making a good sound and reaching the more difficult notes. Sho is a very enthusiastic instructor and is very sensitive to the way in which his students learn. He is always trying to think of new and creative ways in which to convey musical concepts and technique. Claire always looks forward to the next lesson with Sho!” - Christine from Sudbury

“We love Sho. He got a few duets to have fun and our son insisted I come and watch. Our son even downloaded music for Pirates of the Caribbean after last class and practiced on his own so he could surprise Sho today. Sho keeps things fun and challenging and tweaks class in real time to encourage our son’s latest interests. We are so lucky to have him. Thank you!”  - Divya from Sudbury
