Reese Pike, MM in Global Jazz

Teaching Philosophy

“I believe that every student brings something unique to the process of making music, so it is my goal to help students find the musical styles, practices, and strategies that work best for them. I work with students to find their individual voice on their instrument, and most importantly, experience the joy of making music. I believe that teaching is the best way to share the incredible joy that can come from music, so I work to make sure that my students feel supported and comfortable while they develop their own creative freedom. I also believe in the importance of learning to improvise, no matter which musical genre a student is most comfortable in. I support students to explore different methods and techniques for improvising, create their own melodies and musical ideas, and develop their creative voice by using their instrument. Every student learns in different ways, so I work to find the tools that work best for each individual, understanding that there is no “one size fits all” method when it comes to music. My hope for my students is that they can develop lifelong habits of enjoying music and creative expression.”
