Julia Rupp cello instructor

Julia Rupp, MM in Cello Performance

Julia Rupp

Cello

Teaching Philosophy

“My teaching philosophy is simple: I am constantly striving to find the balance between musical development, balance in the body, and fun. While musical development may seem obvious, I try to take it a step further and encourage my students to make artistic choices early on. It is a developed skill, and the sooner you start, the more natural it feels. In my early years of playing the cello, my physical balance was neglected and required years of fixing and re-learning. In graduate school, I developed tendinitis in my left wrist. These issues are avoidable with proper care and attention for the body, which I am to instill in each of my students. And, fun… well, shouldn’t we try to find fun in everything we do? I love to give my students flexibility and autonomy when choosing repertoire to keep the spark alive because the best motivation to practice is having fun and enjoying the process.”

Biography

Julia began playing the cello at age ten and has since worked hard to become an accomplished musician and teacher. Originally from Warwick, New York, she began her studies in public school. In high school, Julia studied privately with Jennifer Green, a cello professor at the Manhattan School of Music's Precollege program. She attended Ithaca College, where she earned her undergraduate degree in cello performance and received the esteemed Presidential Scholarship in recognition of her musical and academic achievements. At Ithaca College, she studied with both Elizabeth Simkin and Heidi Hoffman. In 2017, Julia attended The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, pursuing a Master’s in Music (MM) with a concentration in Cello Performance. There, she studied with Rhonda Rider. Since graduating in May 2019, Julia has performed around Boston and Cape Cod and expanded her private studio. More recently, she has been composing music for film and television as a hobby.

Julia began teaching in 2016 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in August 2023.
