Teaching Philosophy
“I have been fortunate to have learned from many outstanding music educators, each with their own unique perspective to their instrument and to music. In my own teaching I synthesize these approaches with my own work studying and teaching physics to encourage my students to both understand what is physically happening as they play their instrument while also being able to think abstractly, metaphorically, and artistically. As students approach new repertoire, I emphasize researching the context and style of the music to best convey the musicality behind the notes and rhythms on the page. My teaching emphasizes listening, non-judgmental reflection, goal-setting, and problem solving strategies so students can become their own best teacher; after all, they are the only one that is there every time they pick up their instrument.”
Biography
Gareth Ramsey is a trumpet player, audio engineer, and music teacher based in Boston. Formerly a high school physics teacher, Gareth now teaches music and movement for the Norwood High School Marching Band and teaches private lessons with Note-worthy Experiences. He has also taught music production and multiple world-class drum and bugle corps. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of Chicago and a Master of Music (MM) in Trumpet Performance from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, Hungary, China, and the United States, Gareth has a deep appreciation for the global music community and the importance of flexibility when approaching unfamiliar styles or cultures. This practice of listening and adaptation is fundamental to his playing and teaching.
In the Boston area, you can see Gareth perform with the Kendall Square Orchestra, the Boston Modern Big Band, the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, and various small-ensemble configurations. A chamber music specialist, Gareth frequently collaborates with living composers to perform new works. When he’s not on stage, Gareth also works as an audio engineer and producer and likes to compose music for trumpet and electronics. In his free time, Gareth enjoys rock climbing, cooking, and video games.
Gareth began teaching in 2016 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in July 2026.
