Teaching Philosophy

“Music-making is at any level a noble and sacred endeavor. For that reason, it can be intimidating, demanding, but indeed rewarding. Most simply put, the role of an instructor is to know a student, and then to find that student's next step forward. The most successful students I've had have embraced as much music as they can with earnest curiosity, and have sought to bridge gaps in their understanding with technical study, refinement, and by asking questions. In times of difficulty or uncertainty, they look inward for understanding of themselves. After 7 years of teaching music and around 12 of freelancing, I feel compelled to constantly accrue methods and resources that help foster these critical skills of life-long learning, and technical authority on the Saxophone, Bass, Guitar, Flute, and Clarinet. I have not, however, found anything more rewarding than helping students find the answers to their questions and play music that they love.”
