Teaching Philosophy

“I approach teaching in a way that is both attentive and flexible, meeting each student where they are and helping them move forward with clarity and confidence. For me, it’s important that students don’t just learn to play the piano, but truly understand what they’re playing and hearing. I often incorporate listening, singing, and simple musical patterns to build that foundation, so that reading and playing music become more natural over time. My European background in Kodály-based teaching has shaped this approach, which I adapt to each student’s needs and personality.

At the same time, I want lessons to feel engaging and meaningful, not mechanical. Because of my work as a composer and performer, I naturally bring small elements of creativity into lessons - whether that’s improvising, shaping a phrase more expressively, or occasionally creating something new together. These moments help students feel more connected to the music.

Over time, my goal is to help students develop not only solid musical skills, but also a sense of ownership, confidence, and genuine enjoyment in making music.”

Biography

Baris Perker is a dedicated music educator, pianist, composer, and producer who brings a thoughtful and encouraging approach to teaching. With over two decades of experience, he has worked with students of all levels, from preschool beginners to advanced musicians. He studied piano and composition extensively in Europe and the United States, earning his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in Composition from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He has taught in both conservatory settings and private studios.

In addition to teaching, Baris works in music production, creating music for educational videos, films, and recordings. This experience naturally informs his teaching, helping him connect musical concepts to real-world listening and creativity.

Baris is attentive to each student’s individual needs, learning style, and pace, and adapts his teaching to make learning feel both accessible and engaging. In his lessons, students build strong fundamentals through listening, singing, and understanding how music works, while also exploring creativity through improvisation and composition.

His goals are to help each student feel confident, supported, and personally connected to the music they are learning.

Baris began teaching in 2001 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in April 2026.
