Teaching Philosophy
"Over my years as a musician, I have found the study of music a wonderful opportunity to cultivate discipline, poise, patience, and sensitivity. Each isolated challenge encountered in practice and performance offers itself up as a checkpoint toward greater ease and competence in every area of life. In working with students on specific skills--rhythm, phrase-shaping, reading, and the like--I try consciously to keep this bigger picture in mind. Of course, teaching itself presents its own challenges and checkpoints; learning how to attend to the wants, style, and peculiarities of each student is a process that continues without end. My top priorities as a teacher, then, are to help students achieve their musical goals, find joy for themselves and others through music, and establish great practice habits that can be applied in daily life. If, years down the line, a student of mine can look back and think of even one way they benefited holistically through piano lessons, I've done my job!"
Biography
Alexander began taking piano lessons at the age of four. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in jazz studies from Temple University, where he worked closely with Philadelphia and NYC jazz luminaries, including Bruce Barth, Tom Lawton, John Swana, and Joe Magnarelli. He also studied abroad in the Netherlands, where he explored Western classical and Carnatic music. After leaving Philadelphia in 2019, he lived in State College, PA, where he taught piano, performed locally, and formally studied the Taubman Approach, the Alexander Technique, and the Suzuki Method. During this time, he also provided qualitative and harmonic analyses to artificial intelligence researchers at Pennsylvania State University. As a teacher, he draws on a long, varied history as an accompanist, sideman, soloist, and composer to nurture students' artistry, technique, and musical knowledge. He currently lives in Boston, MA, where he recently completed a 3-year teacher-training course in the Alexander Technique from the Alexander Technique Training Center, a psychophysical re-education technique.
Alexander began teaching in 2018 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in September 2023.
