Community Leadership Track: A Free Leadership Program for Music Students
Looking for a meaningful way for your child to build leadership skills, give back to the community, and stand out on college and scholarship applications? The new Note-worthy Experiences® Community Leadership Track gives music students the opportunity to turn their passion for music into real-world leadership and service.
This free, year-long student leadership program runs annually from January through December and is designed for music students who want to grow not only as musicians, but also as confident, compassionate leaders.
Through mentorship, community service, performance opportunities, and leadership experiences, students learn that being a great musician is about more than performing on stage. It is also about using their talents to encourage others, strengthen their community, and make a positive impact.
What Is The Community Leadership Track?
Note-worthy Experiences’ Community Leadership Track recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in:
- Musicianship
- Leadership
- Community service
- Mentorship
- Character
- Commitment to making a positive impact through music
The goal is simple: help young musicians become confident leaders who use their musical talents to inspire and serve others.
This approach is consistent with a broader understanding of youth leadership. According to Boys & Girls Club of America’s guide to developing leadership skills in kids, leadership isn’t simply about being “in charge.” Young people can develop leadership by learning to lead themselves, work effectively with others, and take positive actions within their communities.
This is exactly the kind of leadership the Community Leadership Track is designed to encourage through music.
Why Should Music Students Participate in a Leadership Program?
Music education already teaches students important skills such as discipline, perseverance, creativity, communication, and goal-setting. But students can take those skills even further when they have opportunities to lead, mentor, volunteer, and serve others through music.
The Community Leadership Track gives students the chance to put their musical abilities into action.
Instead of simply adding another activity to a student’s schedule, this program encourages students to ask:
How can I use what I’ve learned to help someone else?
That shift – from learning music for yourself to using music to positively impact others – is at the heart of the program.
What Leadership Skills Will Music Students Develop?
The Community Leadership Track is designed to help students develop skills that extend far beyond the music studio.
Students can strengthen:
- Leadership Skills: Students learn how to take initiative, communicate effectively, work with others, and take responsibility for meaningful projects and experiences.
- Communication Skills: Whether mentoring a younger musicians become, assisting at a recital, or performing for a community audience, students gain valuable experience communicating with different age groups and audiences.
- Confidence: Leadership opportunities encourage students to step outside their comfort zones and discover that they are capable of making a difference.
- Empathy and Compassion: Serving others through music helps students understand the power of sharing their time, talents, and attention with people in their community.
- Mentorship Skills: Older or more experienced students can encourage younger musicians and serve as positive role models.
- Responsibility: Students learn that leadership means showing up, following through, and contributing to something bigger than themselves.
Is This a Good Leadership Opportunity for High School Students?
Yes. The program can be particularly valuable for middle school and high school music students who are looking for authentic ways to develop leadership experience.
Rather than simply listing “member of a club” on a college application, students can demonstrate how they:
- Took initiative
- Served others
- Mentored younger students
- Contributed to their community
- Used their musical abilities in meaningful ways
- Developed leadership skills over time
For students preparing for college, scholarship, internship, or future employment applications, these experiences can help tell a much more complete story about who they are.
How Can Music Help Students Develop Leadership Skills?
Music naturally teaches many of the qualities associated with strong leadership.
A musician learns to practice consistently, overcome mistakes, listen carefully, collaborate with others, communicate ideas, and perform despite nerves.
Those are leadership skills, too.
When students combine their musical training with service and mentorship, they begin to understand how those skills can benefit the people around them.
Do Students Need to Be Advanced Musicians to Participate?
This program recognizes musicianship as well as leadership, service, mentorship, and character.
Students don’t have to be advanced-level performers to become leaders. This is an inclusive program.
Leadership can begin wherever a student is in their musical journey.
A student who encourages a younger musician, volunteers to help at an event, performs for a community audience, or takes responsibility for helping others can make a meaningful contribution.
How Can Young Musicians Make a Positive Impact Through Music?
When young musicians use their talents to encourage others, give back to their community, and make a positive difference, their music becomes something truly Note-worthy.
